In 2018 I set up a sociable cycling group to encourage people to get out on their bikes and to meet new people. At first there were 3-4 riders turning up, which I thought was great.
For the first couple of years, although we had great fun it wasn't looking like the group was going to grow, and I wondered why. When I sat down and thought about it, I think it was because the evening rides were too far and sometimes too fast for most cyclists who just wanted a mid week evening ride after work. So I thought I'd shorten the rides and slow down the pace. When I did this I instantly got more riders turning up. From around 2023 I was regularly getting double figures turning up on a Wednesday evening, sometimes 20-30 riders. This made me very proud!

Because the group has grown so big, we now have a few of the riders who have very kindly offered to lead out separate groups so that riders who want to ride a little bit faster can do so and it also keeps the train of cyclists on the road down to under 10 riders per group, making it easier for car drivers to come past us safely.

We ride every Wednesday evening from Early April through to the middle of October and when the evening rides finish for the year we ride on a weekend, during the daytime 2-3 times per month through the autumn/winter until the evening rides start up again in April.

We have a Caygill Christmas Cracker ride that involves a daytime ride In December with a night out after the ride.

We regularly stop at some of our local pubs after our Wednesday evening rides and enjoy food and drink there. This is something I am very proud of because we have become very friendly with the pub owners and their regulars and I feel we are helping our local community survive in these very testing times.

The Wednesday Wheeler's has grown from strength to strength, resulting in riders being able to purchase custom clothing at a very affordable price and them all receiving a loyalty card to use when in our store to be able to receive discounts.
